Well drilling rules in Michigan

Michigan registers water well drilling contractors and pump installers each year under Part 127 of Public Act 368 of 1978, administered by Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). A contractor that has not renewed by May 1 may not drill wells or install pumps until the registration is renewed (EGLE water well contractor registration).

Before you hire, look the business up in EGLE's Directory of Registered Contractors, which is linked from that page. EGLE also publishes a list of administrative actions taken to revoke or suspend contractor registrations on the same page.

Well permits and site rules are handled locally, so call your county or district health department before any work begins and ask who files the permit. Confirm that answer with your health department, since requirements differ by county.
